What is a Mala Necklace?

A mala, meaning “garland” is a necklace also referred to as a string of Buddhist prayer beads. They are a traditional tool containing 108 beads used to count breaths or recitations of your chosen mantra, as well as a Guru bead and in some styles marker beads as well.
To use, hold your mala in your right hand, draped between your middle and index fingers. Starting at the guru bead, use your thumb to count each smaller bead, pulling it toward you as you recite your mantra. Do this 108 times, traveling around the mala, until you once again reach the guru bead.

Why 108 beads?

There are many proposed reasons for the use of 108 beads in a mala, but the most commonly agreed upon is that “1” represents the Source, the higher truth, or the universe. “0” stands for humbleness, emptiness, and the willingness to learn. Finally, the number “8” is related to infinity, eternity, and timelessness.

What is the guru bead?

The Guru bead, similar to the marker beads, is not counted in the 108 beads of the mala. This bead symbolizes our Teacher, the Divine or God.
When practicing our meditation we must never cross over the Guru bead – as it would show extreme disrespect and is looked on as stepping over your teacher. Instead, you should turn the mala around 180 degrees and go back the way you came, in the reverse direction. Since the Guru bead is not counted during meditation, and is separate from the rest of the mala it illustrates that our Teacher, God, or Divine is beyond ourselves and our Universe.

Why the tassel?

The tassel represents our connection to the Divine as it is the link between our meditation beads and Guru beads and holds all of the threads and beads together.

Why silk cording?

The thread itself represents the bond that we have with the Universe. It holds the beads together, it is the thread of the Universe. The beads come from the Universe and so do we. The thread symbolizes that everything is interconnected and without separation.
Why overhand knotting? The knots placed between the beads ensure that the beads do not touch each other and therefore they don’t distract us during meditation with a sound. They symbolize our connection to the divine Universe and help us to keep our distractions separate from ourselves in the same way that the beads are separated from each other.

Stones have been believed to contain certain metaphysical properties for many centuries which the wearer can benefit from!

For example…

SARDONYX is a variety of onyx that contains bands of carnelian, which is consistent with its use as an elixir of habitation and communication. The mineral assists in bringing happiness in marriage and serious relationships and assists in appreciation of good fortune in life and with loved ones. It can be used to attract friends and encourage self-control, as well as to diminish hesitation and to provide courage.

RUTILATED QUARTZ intensifies the power of the quartz crystal. It assists one in getting to the root cause of a problem and therefore provides access to the reason for a disease or discomfort so that one can remedy the situation.

HEMATITE enhances mental capability, memory capacity, original thinking, and mental dexterity. It aids one in the realization that the only limits which exist for you are those which you have set for yourself. Hematite also assists in the focusing of energy and emotions for a balance between Body, Mind, & Soul.

LAVA is a grounding stone that strengthens one’s connection to Mother Earth. It gives us strength and courage, allowing us stability through times of change. Lava also works as a natural essential oil diffuser during meditation sessions or daily wear. Simply apply a few drops of your favorite oil or oil blend to the beads and the scent will be slowly released.

– Essential oil choices for a grounding meditation session include Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Patchouli.
– Essential oils to enhance the relaxation of meditation include Sage, Lavender, and Chamomile.

All of our jewelry is handmade in the USA and we take great pride in creating each piece. We hope that you love your piece as much as we loved creating it.
